Adventure Activities in the Bay of Islands

Coming to visit the Bay of Islands doesn’t have to be all about lounging around on the beautiful golden beaches fringed with pohutakawa trees! There are tonnes of adventurous activities available that would give Queenstown a run for its money as the adventure capital of the world!

Ocean Adventure

The fastest boat to the Hole in the Rock, Ocean Adventure can reach speeds of up to 74 km/h and is the perfect mix of exhilaration and exploration! You’ll be grinning from ear to ear (speed induced of course) as you zip across the water taking in the iconic Bay of Islands scenery. It's not all need for speed though, as you'll also stop for photo opportunities and to view marine wildlife such as dolphins along the way on this 1.5 hour experience.

New Zealand is known for its adrenaline inducing activities, and parasailing is no exception. But unlike its closely related counterparts like the bungy and sky diving, parasailing allows you to get your heart pumping whilst still enabling you to sit back and take in your amazing surroundings. The Flying Kiwi Parasail in Paihia is New Zealand’s highest parasail at 1300ft, and treats you to stunning aerial views over the entire Bay of Islands. This safe and unique experience is an absolute must do for people on all levels of the adventure seeking spectrum.

Discover a whole other world often reserved only for marine wildlife living under the sea, and go diving with Paihia Dive! Being able to breathe under the water is such an outlandish feeling, it’s bound to get those adrenaline levels a little higher than usual. Not only will you see an array of different kinds of fish and marine wildlife like turtles, stingray and sometimes whales, but you’ll also get to explore shipwrecks like the HMNZS Canterbury and the Rainbow Warrior! Visibility is consistently around 15 to 20 metres, but can get up to 40 metres in late summer, which is when it’s the perfect time to take the plunge!

Sky Dive Bay of Islands offer the highest skydive in New Zealand, at a crazy 20,00ft above sea level! You don’t get more adventurous than jumping out of a plane at that height! To put that in to perspective that’s higher than Mt Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa! If you’re not blind with fright as you traverse up into the atmosphere, you’ll also be able to take in the most spectacular scenery of the Bay of Islands as well as a lot of the North Island!

Waitangi Mountain Bike Park

Not all adventure activities involve heights or being out on the water in the Bay of Islands! The community built Mountain Bike Park is a great way to get the heart rate up via a mix of fitness and adrenaline! There are trails suitable to all levels ranging from easy to advanced so you can take it at your own pace. To date there have been over 40km of trails completed and a further 30kms in the pipeline, so keep posted for when there a new trails to explore!
