Chinese New Year in Auckland

Celebrate Chinese New Year in Auckland

On Tuesday 5th February, we officially welcome in the Year of the Pig. There will be so many places in Auckland celebrating the occasion, but to make it easier for you to know what’s on, we’ve outlined our best picks so you don’t miss out on any of the celebrations!

Go on a Chinese New Year Harbour Light Cruise

To celebrate the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival, there will be special harbour cruises to view the Auckland Harbour Bridge being lit up by a spectacular light show. Jump on board to be treated to a welcome drink, a platter of sweet and savoury nibbles, and unrivalled views from the water of the Auckland Harbour Bridge coming to life.

Celebrate Chinese New Year at SKYCITY

Head to SKYCITY during February to celebrate Chinese New Year. There will be a beautiful Chinese garden under the Sky Tower and a Federal Street festival on Friday 8 February. There will also be live entertainment such as traditional dragon and lion performers as well as Night Noodle markets throughout the month.

The Lantern Festival

Head along to the Auckland Domain between the 14th and 17th of February to be entertained by the Auckland Lantern Festival. You’ll be greeted by hundreds of handmade Chinese lanterns, music and dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, traditional Chinese art and craft. It’s a truly spectacular event that’s free to attend, and perfect for all ages!

Parnell Little Pigs Exhibition

In its fourth year running, this event coordinates over 20 extraordinary Artists and Celebrities to create individual works of art to the theme of the Chinese Zodiac. This year they will be designing and creating ‘Little Pigs’ that will be auctioned off. Over 20 exclusive ‘Little Pigs’ will be displayed throughout various Parnell galleries, stores and retail shops for all to view for two weeks from February 9th through to February 24th. Head along and go on the “Little Pig Walk of Parnell” to look at them all.
