Northland Alternate Route | February 2024
Please be aware that SH1 Brynderwyn Hills are currently closed for repairs and will reopen mid-2024.
Northland and the Bay of Islands will still be easily accessible via alternate routes during this time. These will all be clearly signposted from SH1.
We suggest you enjoy the detour and experience a little more of Northland.
Take a short detour via Waipu (turning at Kaiwaka reserved for light traffic only). This will add just over 20 minutes (14km) to your journey and gives you the opportunity to take a break at Waipu for a swim at the beautiful white sand surf beach, or grab a coffee from one of the local cafes.
If you have more time to explore take the scenic route - SH12/14 will take you up the rugged west coast via Dargaville, past giant kauri tree Tāne Mahuta in the Waipoua Forest, and the coastal town ships of Opononi and Omāpere. This will add an hour to your journey (71km). Please note this route has been designated for heavy traffic during the road closure.
