Island Walks

Explore the island on foot via the established walking tracks available. All walks start and finish at Otehei Bay and range from easy 30 minutes strolls to more challenging hikes up to 5 hours return. All walks, even the short ones, offer stunning views across the islands and endless photo opportunities.

Otehei Loop Tracks
Easy Grade 20 mins - 1 hr

Two interesting loop tracks at an easy grade. This walk allows you to take in the great panoramic views of the Bay of Islands from multiple high points. It features unique archaeological sites of Maori occupation and you can return to Otehei Bay via the working farm sheep yards (please close the gates behind you). These loop tracks can connect with the Cable Bay loop and the Urupukapuka Loop.

Cable Bay Loop
Easy Grade 20 - 40 mins

This loop track is in open pasture and is accessed by continuing from the Otehei Loop of from Cable or Sunset Bays. It passes by the Urupa (burial ground) and can include a side track to a headland pa. Camping is available at Cable and Sunset Bays and both are good for swimming. Rare shore birds (dotterel and oystercatchers) breed and nest here from August to February.

Urupukapuka Loop Track
Medium Grade 40 mins - 1 hour

This track takes in the islands high point, offering fantastic views of the island, Cape Brett and the Bay of Islands to the north and west. It is accessed from Urupukapuka Bay behind the campground and connects with the steeper Pateke Loop and Paradise Loop Tracks. Swimming and snorkelling are good in Urupukapuka Bay. Rare shore birds (dotterel and oystercatchers) breed and nest from August to February. Kumara pits and garden sites demonstrate the density of Maori population in pre-European times.

Paradise Loop Track
Steep Grade 1 - 1.5 hours

This steep graded track is accessed off the Urupukapuka Loop near the high point or from Paradise Bay (good swimming) and descends through regenerating native vegetation to the coast. Continue to the north to take in Whangaapu Pa with its unique 'double ditch'. This track connects with the Pateke Loop near Entico Bay.

Pateke Loop Track
Medium Grade 1.5 - 2 hours

This medium grade track can include a side track, showing remains of gum digging holes, to the wildlife viewing hide where you may see Pateke (brown teal) and other wetland birds. The Pateke Loop can be accessed from the Paradise or Urupukapuka Loops or directly from Entico Bay. The regenerating vegetation has increasing bio-diversity values. Good swimming.

Cliff Pa Loop
Steep Grade 45 mins - 1 hour

This steeply graded track includes many steps to reduce the wear on the fragile archaeological sites. The Pa is situated above high sea cliffs and offers dramatic views of Waewaetorea and Okahu Islands. Children must be closely supervised on this walk. This loop track connects with the Pateke Loop Akeake Peninsula track.

Akeake Peninsula Track
Medium Grade 30 mins one way

This medium grade track follows the ridge from North Entico Bay along the peninsula ending at a sandy beach with good swimming.
