Exploring Northland’s Hidden Island Paradise: Otehei Bay

Summer’s well and truly knocking on our doorstep now, and this year more than ever is a great opportunity to uncover what’s in our very own backyard – and this location is no different!

If you’re planning your domestic getaway for the warmer months, we’ve got to let you into NZ’s best-kept secret, a little place called Otehei Bay!

Tucked away off the coast of the Bay of Islands, Otehei Bay, Urupukapuka Island is a must-visit location for your Summer travels packed with endless options for relaxing, exploring and refuelling, perfect for a solo adventure or with a group of friends and family.

Here’s everything you need to know about exploring this hidden paradise!

Arriving in paradise…

Prepare for white sandy beaches, endless views and turquoise water! Once you arrive in the Bay of Islands, getting to this slice of paradise is just a short ferry ride from Paihia or Russell. The Otehei Bay ferry departs a few times a day right through Summer, so pack your day bags and book your tickets now before they get snapped up!

Explore on foot

If exploring the island on foot is for you, then the walks on Urupukapuka are not to be missed and a great way to take in the views, spot the native birds and listen to the prolific bird song! Starting at Otehei Bay, there’s the perfect track for all types of groups and families, ranging in length and difficulty. If a quick 30 minute stroll to sandy beaches and stunning swimming spots is for you, try the Otehei Loop Tracks. Or, if you’re looking for a longer hike, you can head right around the island in around 5 hours – just don’t forget to pack a lunch or drop into Otehei Bay Café.

Take the fun to the water…

Some of the best bits of Otehei Bay can’t be reached by foot, so what better way to discover these than on a guided kayak tour?! Paddle through rock gardens and explore beautiful caves with our experienced guides showing you the ropes the whole way.

The snorkelling at Otehei Bay is a must-do too, with clear turquoise water and friendly fish ready to be spotted, or even hire a paddle board and test your skills in the bay. A local right of passage is jumping off the jetty!

Where to eat & drink!

After all your exploring, you’re bound to need some relaxing time too. Get comfy in the bean bags at Otehei Bay Café and sample something from our menu. We have live music over the peak Summer period, so check out the line-up and book your trip to catch some of these great artists!

Make the most of our special events

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the festive season then the typical Kiwi way – on the beach, of course! If you’re looking to spend your Christmas Day with a delicious meal, glistening water and relaxation, then An Otehei Bay Christmas is for you (plus, you can leave the dishes to us too!).

As for New Years, we’ll be bringing in 2021 with great company, live music and an incredible fireworks display right in paradise with the Otehei Bay New Years’ Eve Party! There’s a party package to suit everyone, whether you want the full ferry, buffet and party experience, or just need entry into the event.
